The face of shopping, healthcare, personal care, and cooking are all changing. By simply answering a few questions and adding your shipping and billing information a seemingly endless list of items can be delivered to your door without you ever having to leave the comfort of your home. Arguably this sounds like an amazing advancement to our lives; however, some of these conveniences also come with some risks.

If you’re currently exploring the different options for orthodontia you’ve likely already taken time to learn about traditional braces, Invisalign, as well as mail-order teeth aligners as viable options to consider. Doing your research is something we always recommend. Here are a few things we’d like to share with you as you consider going the at-home route vs with an orthodontist.

Working with an Orthodontist

Your teeth and smile are as unique as your fingerprints - no two are the same. That’s why finding the right orthodontist that aligns with your specific needs and budget for you or your child is so important. When you choose to work with an orthodontist that you regularly see, in person, we’re able to not only examine inside your mouth, but also gather x-rays and details about your teeth to compile the details and create a richer understanding of what your unique needs are.

Many potential orthodontic patients believe that orthodontia is just to align the teeth in a more visually pleasing manner when in reality braces and aligners do so much more. Our goal isn’t to just create a beautiful smile, but to also create a highly functional mouth through a well structured bite.

As we grow and change from our teenage years into adulthood many aspects of us are still growing, changing, and finding permanence. Because of these changes and varied outcomes it’s imperative that we examine beyond just inside your mouth. As we begin to align your teeth we’re able to adjust our course of action as needed to ensure the best outcome and still work towards completing your treatment on time.

As orthodontists, we want only the best for our patients. Orthodontists have gone to school for years to better understand the anatomy of the mouth and have seen a myriad of unique cases to help us know the best course of action to take in order to achieve not only a beautiful, but functional smile.

DIY At-Home Treatments

We absolutely understand the attraction to these mail-order aligners that are beginning to pop up. Who doesn’t love shopping, ordering groceries, and planning their next vacation from the comfort of their home? These conveniences and advancements are great for certain industries; however, as professional orthodontists we don’t believe orthodontia is one of them. Here us out:

Being able to schedule a call with your general practitioner and speak with them virtually is great especially when you’re needing a prescription refill or discuss an ailment that’s bothering you. But, like so many other things, there are limits to what you can do virtually.

If you are wishing to align your smile through clear aligners that is something we can also explore with you while determining the best course of action for your specific needs. Some orthodontic patients will only need braces for a handful of months while others may need treatment for years and will need to use other instruments outside of just braces to achieve an aligned smile and bite.
