New Mandibular Advancement Feature

As a leading provider of Invisalign in Brampton & Burlington, Dr. Iwasiuk has seen Invisalign treatment improve since first being introduced in the late 1990s. When Invisalign was first made available, treatment with clear aligners was somewhat limited, with less predictable results and the inability to perform some types of movements. But following two decades worth of intensive research, design, and redesign, Align Technology, the maker of Invisalign, was able to fine-tune its clear aligner treatment in order to correct an increasing number of orthodontic issues.

Just when we thought that Invisalign couldn’t get any better, last spring Align Technology announced that it was starting to offer mandibular jaw advancement as part of its Invisalign Teen treatment.

What is the Mandibular Advancement Feature All About?

The new mandibular advancement feature is designed to improve the treatment experience for teenagers in need of Class II correction by simultaneously straightening their teeth and improving jaw position.

When a patient is undergoing Class II treatment, the orthodontist is aligning the teeth and advancing the lower jaw to improve the patient’s profile. Invisalign Teen with mandibular advancement is designed to replicate the action of commonly used functional appliances for Class II treatment through new “precision wings” which hold the lower jaw in a forward position, while simultaneously correcting the malocclusion (bad bite) and crowding issue.

When regular braces are used to advance the position of the lower jaw, steady force is applied to the jaw through the use of elastics (rubber bands) that run from the upper jaw to the lower jaw, pulling the lower jaw forward. Instead of using elastics in this way, the “precision wings” on the upper and lower Invisalign aligners with the mandibular advancement feature interlock to hold the lower jaw forward.

Before this new Invisalign Teen feature was made available, orthodontists typically corrected the position of the jaw and straightened the teeth in separate phases, resulting in a longer treatment time. The mandibular advancement feature makes treatment faster and more comfortable which is something teenagers (and their parents) really appreciate!
