Clear Aligners Target Young Patients with Mixed Dentition

Discover Orthodontics offers quality, comprehensive orthodontic treatment for children, teens, and adults. During orthodontic consultations, our orthodontist explains how braces, clear aligners, or Invisalign can be used to correct dental problems.

Orthodontics deals with the correction of improperly positioned teeth and jaws. Using clear aligners with mixed dentition, young patients can correct their teeth without braces.

What Are Clear Aligners?

Children and adults alike prefer clear aligners to metal braces. The clear plastic makes them less noticeable than metal braces. You can also remove them to eat and brush your teeth. A clear aligner can only be obtained from an orthodontist.

Orthodontists take x-rays and impressions of your teeth and send them to a lab that makes aligners. Aligners should be worn for at least 22 hours a day. New aligners need to be obtained every few weeks by the orthodontic. Treatment time can be as little as 6 months. The cost of Invisalign at our office is often less than traditional braces as they require much less frequent visits, saving you both money and time!

What Is the Mixed Dentition Stage?

During the mixed dentition stage, a child has both baby teeth and adult teeth. For parents, this can be a difficult time because they are not sure whether to take their child to an orthodontist or wait until all of the adult teeth have erupted.

Parents may be able to find guidance through this process from their children's orthodontists. Children with mixed dentition may benefit from early intervention in some cases. Children with severe crowding of the teeth may need orthodontic treatment before all of their adult teeth have come in, for example. When there is less pressure from the surrounding teeth, it may be easier to move the teeth.

Orthodontists may recommend waiting until all the adult teeth have come in before starting treatment in other cases. A better guide to moving the teeth into their final position can be found in the position of the adult teeth. Orthodontists should decide whether to begin treatment during the mixed dentition stage on a case-by-case basis.
