How to Remove Stains from Invisalign
Orthodontic treatment at Discover Orthodontics begins with a warm, welcoming environment and expert care. Whether you're considering retainers, braces, or Invisalign® clear aligners, Dr. Bart Iwasiuk is here to help straighten your smile. While Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible, they can become discolored with daily wear. The good news? There are simple and effective ways to remove those stains and keep your aligners crystal clear.
Soak Them in Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is a mild bleaching agent and can kill bacteria, act as a gentle whitener, and break down surface stains from drinks like coffee, wine, or tea. To remove stains from Invisalign using hydrogen peroxide, create a 50/50 solution of water and 3% hydrogen peroxide. Then, soak your clear aligners for about 15 to 30 minutes. Afterward, rinse them with water.
Make a Vinegar Solution
Another way to remove stains from your Invisalign aligners is by making a vinegar solution. Vinegar cleans gently and removes surface discoloration without damaging aligners. It breaks down the mineral deposits present in saliva and hard water, which typically forms the cloudy residue you see building up over time. Vinegar can also remove stubborn stains from tea, coffee, wine, and food coloring. Plus, its antibacterial properties prevent plaque buildup and remove odor-causing bacteria.
To make a vinegar solution, mix three parts water with one part white vinegar, and then let your aligners soak for about 15 to 30 minutes. After the soak, rinse them with water.
Make a Baking Soda Paste
Cleaning your aligners with a baking soda paste is also a safe and effective way to remove stains. Baking soda is a natural whitening powder and mild abrasive. Its alkaline properties can break down bacteria and plaque. And unlike harsh chemicals, baking soda is a non-damaging formula. You can clean your aligners (and your teeth) with the paste.
To make a baking soda paste, simply mix one teaspoon of baking soda with a few drops of water. This will give you a thick consistency. Then, using a soft-bristled toothbrush, gently scrub your Invisalign aligners, especially where the stains are. Afterward, rinse with water.
Clean Them With Soap and a Toothbrush
If you don't have vinegar, baking soda, or hydrogen peroxide at your disposal, a mild antibacterial soap can effectively remove discoloration and buildup from your aligners. Soap not only breaks down buildup and stains but also eliminates bacteria. Moreover, it's non-abrasive, so it won't scratch your aligners.
To clean your aligners with soap, apply a small amount to a soft-bristled toothbrush and gently scrub them. Then rinse with warm or cold water. Avoid using hot water as it can warp them.
Use Invisalign Cleaning Crystals
Waterdown Invisalign cleaning crystals are designed to specifically clean aligners. The crystals are made up of gentle cleansing agents that break down buildup and stains. They also eliminate bacteria that cause plaque buildup and dissolve debris without scratching your aligners.
To use Invisalign cleaning crystals, dissolve one packet in a glass of warm water. Soak your aligners in the solution for about 20 minutes. Then rinse with water.
