Tips for Caring for Orthodontic Appliances

Posted on 12/02/2021

At Discover Orthodontics, we provide quality, comprehensive orthodontic care for children, teens, and adults. Our orthodontist takes the time to sit with patients and talk through the orthodontic treatment, how to clean their braces or Invisalign, and how to care for their orthodontic appliances. These are all important steps to take when keeping your orthodontic treatment on track. If your orthodontic treatment involves wearing an orthodontic appliance, ensure that you take great care of it and wear it for the recommended number of hours per day.

How to Care for Your Orthodontic Appliance

Although there are a number of different orthodontic appliances that could be involved in a patient's orthodontic care, the following rules generally apply when caring for all orthodontic appliances:

  • Whether you've got headgear, a distal jet appliance, or another appliance, it's crucial that you wear the device exactly how your orthodontist intended. This means for the full time every day and night.
  • Do not slack on your oral hygiene while using an orthodontic appliance. For some appliances, it may create more areas for food and bacteria to hide in your mouth, which means you'll need to take extra care when brushing and flossing your teeth.
  • Avoid eating hard, crunchy, or sticky foods. These types of foods can damage your orthodontic appliance and disrupt your orthodontic treatment.
  • Eat soft foods that are compatible with your orthodontic appliance. Good food options include soup, smoothies, mashed potatoes, casseroles, baked pasta, and boiled vegetables.
  • If your orthodontic appliance does become damaged, contact your "orthodontist near me" to replace it immediately.
